Oily Candles?

Oily Candles - Are card candle covers suitable?

Candle blends and the way they are produced varies greatly.

Most established candle companies don’t have candles that are oily on the surface, but this can be a problem for some producers, especially if looking to use card candle covers as opposed to lids to protect the candles.

If your candles have oil at the surface of the candle, this will soak into a standard card candle cover.

The majority of our customers don't have this problem but some do and then they have either:

  • changed their blend/blend process;
  • just allowed some oil to soak into the cover;
  • coated the cover with some kind of PVA or oil resistant coating; or
  • only used the card covers on those that aren't oily and used lids for the others or just not used anything on top of those ones.

Alternatively, we offer waterproof covers to stop oil from seeping through, but this is a plastic coated material that we cut and not cardboard so it's much less environmentally friendly as it's not so easily recycled, and is not biodegradable. It’s also quite a bit more expensive than standard card, and only comes in a just off-white colour.

However, it is a good temporary solution for oily batches.

If you decide to try and change your blend / blend process, some suggestions I’ve received from my customers may be useful to you:

  • Ensure the wax is neither too hot nor too cold when pouring, as this can cause a split between the wax and the scent causing it to bleed.
  • Leave your candles to set in a cooler room if possible.
  • Try using a different type of wax or wax combination.
  • Try changing your fragrance to wax ratio.

This may be well worth the time to resolve the issue.
